Four earlier conferences are linked to IPMEN 2012 in Chile:
- The One Ocean Marine Forum (OOMF) was the first formal international meeting of marine educators that lead to the formation of IPMEN. This meeting was held on the Hawaiian island of Maui in July 2005. OOMF details and a full copy of the proceedings are available at www.mesa.edu.au/inter/oomf01.asp .
- IPMEN came into being at the International Pacific Marine Educators Conference (IPMEC) in January 2007. Originally scheduled to be held at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, IPMEC was shifted to Hawaii (on the island of Oahu) as a result of the coup in Fiji.
- The first formal IPMEN conference was held in Townsville, Australia, in October 2008. Details of the planning for this Townsville conference can be found at IPMEN 2008 .
- We finally fulfilled our plans to meet in Fiji in July 2010 with IPMEN 2010. Details of the planning for this Townsville conference can be found at IPMEN 2008 .
The presentations from all IPMEC in 2007, IPMEN 2008 and IPMEN 2010 conferences are also available as web-based streaming video at the College of Exploration website www.coexploration.com/ipmen.
